Optical Digital Audio
Optical digital is an alternative to coaxial digital for transmitting both uncompressed PCM digital, as well as compressed digital audio formats such as Dolby Digital™ and DTS® over the S/PDIF. As the name suggests, optical digital uses light to transmit the digital data. This audio format is now a relatively common way to connect audio, due to being relatively inexpensive and having a small singular (usually TOSlink) connector.
Construction of an optical digital cable is relatively simple. Usually a poly-fiber or multi-strand poly-fiber core to enable flexibility, attention to the polished ends and secure connection ensure the best results.
