April 16, 2026 Kordz Examines the Growing Responsibility of AV Integrators for Cybersecurity in Latest Mastering Connectivity Podcast

Industry experts discuss network security, system vulnerabilities and the expanding role of integrators in today’s connected environments.

April 16, 2026 — Kordz, the professional-grade connectivity brand trusted by integrators worldwide, has released a compelling new episode of its Mastering Connectivity Podcast, produced in collaboration with AV Trade Talks. Titled ‘Why Cybersecurity Is Now an Integrator’s Responsibility: What You Need to Know and How to Prepare’,  this eighth instalment explores the critical shift that places cybersecurity at the core of AV system design and integration.

Hosted by Katye McGregor-Bennett, the episode brings together James Chen, Managing Director of Kordz, Kyle Steele of GlobeWave Integration, and senior cybersecurity educator, Jeff Sonnleitner. Together, they unpack how the increasing convergence of AV and IT networks is reshaping industry expectations and redefining the responsibilities of and opportunities available to integrators.

Cybersecurity Is No Longer Optional

The panel makes it clear that as AV systems become more connected, they are no longer standalone installations but integral components of broader network infrastructures. Every device—whether a control processor, display, or smart appliance—represents a potential point of vulnerability if not properly designed and configured.

“AV is now part of the network, and that fundamentally changes the role of the integrator,” says Chen. “Cybersecurity can no longer be treated as an added layer—it must be embedded into every stage of system design, from infrastructure to configuration and ongoing support.”

Sonnleitner underscores the scale of the challenge, noting that even typical residential networks can be scanned hundreds of thousands of times per week by automated systems searching for weaknesses. These constant probes highlight how exposed regular residential and commercial connected systems truly are, regardless of project size or perceived risk.

At the same time, the discussion emphasises that many cybersecurity risks stem from simple oversights, such as leaving default credentials unchanged, enabling unsecured remote access, or relying on consumer-grade networking equipment; issues that are often easy to prevent with the right cybersecurity approach.

The Expanding Role of Integrators

As cybersecurity becomes fundamental to system performance and reliability, integrators are evolving beyond their traditional roles. No longer limited to installation, they are becoming long-term custodians of connected environments, responsible for secure design, ongoing maintenance, system updates, and client education. This shift represents a significant opportunity, opening the door to new models of recurring revenue. Those who fail to adapt may risk being left behind in an increasingly network-driven industry.

Guiding the Future of Secure Connectivity

A key takeaway from this episode is that cybersecurity begins with network design. The panel outlines practical best practices, including the use of professional-grade networking equipment, segmentation through VLANs, properly configured firewalls and clearly defined access controls.

Looking ahead, the conversation explores the dual impact of artificial intelligence, which is accelerating both cybersecurity threats and defenses. While tools are evolving rapidly, the panel agrees that strong infrastructure, disciplined processes and thoughtful design remain the foundation of secure systems.
